Down from the untrod, blue lined rim
Down from the canyons of the sky
The great winged eagle spins and falls,
Oh, such a banner day to die!
Death is an empty, sun-scourched field
Ablaze with the heat of a summer's noon.
Death is the brown grass blowing high
And the ominous buzz of the cleaner's spoon.
Broad broken wings mocking yet death,
Salute the azure wind-swept sky.
Proud golden plumes fan burning air,
Still fierce the glare of the sightless eye.
No more to wheel in heaven's bowl
Or climb the clouds to a boundless height
Nor mark the pray on the paths below,
Or silently soar in majestic flight.
On wings of light, mount the heaven's stair,
Come back to your realm in the wide blue sky.
Come follow the trails above the earth
Oh, such a banner day to fly!
