Menu Clicking and Holding
10.05.11
Before OS X you had to hold down the mouse button the whole time between clicking the name of the menu and selecting the command you wanted. Now you can click the menu name open, release the mouse button, drag to the item you want and click again. In OS X menus stay open after you click them. Also, after you open a menu, you can type the first letter(s) of an item to select it and execute it by pressing the space bar or return key.
Files and Folder Organization
9.21.11
Whether you are dealing with a closet full of clothes, an office full of papers, or a computer full of files, organization is the key. Keeping your computer folders and documents in order can play a big part in making your computing life easier.
The metaphor of a file drawer works well here. If your file cabinet is stuffed with files and they are not in any given order, you will have a hard time finding things. If your computer file cabinet becomes stuffed and disorderly, it will not only cause you to lose things, but it also can sometimes cause computer problems. Just as you would store traditional paper records in folders, your computer uses folders to store your work items, called files.
- On your computer there are two basic types of items that need to be organized: - The first, a folder, is an object that can hold multiple files or documents. On the computer screen, a folder most often looks like a manila file folder. Note: The word “File” can mean document or program.
- The second type of object is a file, which may be a document, a picture, a video clip or other piece of data. A file often has a small icon or picture associated with it.
First, you will want to setup an organization system by creating folders to hold your files and documents. The idea is for you to have a plan and to follow it. You should chose any scheme that fits the way you think and work, what makes sense to you.
You may want to create folders for the various things that you plan to do with your computer. Computers use a tree structure, which could be referred to as a nested arrangement. The tree usually has one truck (the Hard Drive) with many branches.
These branches could be other drives (External drives, thumb drives or Folders or even files!). The branches have many smaller branches and the smaller branches have many leaves (Files).

Question: 09.29.11 - Why does every web site start with www and people always include the www when they give you a web site address. What else is used, and why not save time when speaking about web sites by not saying "www"? (nine syllables!!)
- Polly Pattison
Answer: Every web site has an address. The www is part of that address. Web addresses are called URL's for Uniform Resource Locators. Today there are 30 billion different web address. Here are some examples of common URL's (web addresses)
- ftp://ftp.download.com/public
- telnet://freenet.ecn.ca
- gopher://204.17.0.108
As you can see www in not a part of all addresses. Some browsers will add the http:// and or www to the address for you. At the top of any page you have open you will see the complete URL (address) for that page. When people give you an address without the www, they assume you know it must be added along with the http://.
